[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1615368703246{margin-bottom: 0px !important;}”]On Saturday, ten of our pupils competed remotely in the prestigious Edinburgh Schools Debate, forming teams of two: 

  • Grace (S6) and Emily S (S4)
  • Brinda and Nathan (S4)
  • Katie and Emily T (S3)
  • Angus (S6) and Gabi (S4)
  • Anubha (S6) and Emily Y (S4)

With three rounds running from 9.30am – 3.15pm, the day tested our pupils’ endurance as much as their debating prowess, with motions including the rise in corporate activism and the abolishment of trial by jury.  

After three rounds, Grace, Emily S, Angus, Gabi, Anubha and Emily Y had claimed 1st place victories, with 2nd places achieved by Brinda, Nathan, Katie and Emily T

However, the day was far from over, with the wonderful news that two teams had broken to the Novice Final – Gabi/Angus and Katie/Emily T.

One final motion, on nuclear technology, stood between our four finalists and victory.  Both Wellington teams brought their ‘A’ game in what was a very high-quality final, with Gabi and Angus emerging victorious.  Congratulations to the pair; they were truly authoritative on the subject, with Gabi winning her first ever competitive debate.  Katie and Emily T placed 4th and 5th respectively in the top novice speaker rankings.  

The Final win awarded the school a £50 donation to its nominated charity, the British Heart Foundation.  A huge well done to all who competed on the day; you did yourselves and Wellington proud!
