Richard Ledingham, Head of Geography

What do you love about your subject, Richard?

I love Geography as it provides an opportunity for pupils to go out and discover the world around them – and their role in its future.  Whether that be through the study of human geography, which focuses on the world’s expanding population and cities, the problems we create and the imaginative solutions we discover – or via physical geography, where numerous aspects of the planet are investigated and explored in detail.

What inspired you to become a teacher?

I loved my time at school, primarily due to the approachable and committed staff, who I admired as excellent role models. I actually studied Geology at Edinburgh University, not Geography, but this foray into teaching made me decide against making millions in the oil industry for the best job in the world. I get to talk about the things I love, help young people to be the best they can and help to create a warm, friendly and supported atmosphere, like the kind I myself thrived in.  I enjoy teaching all years, from the energetic and inquisitive P7 classes, all the way up to the Advanced Higher pupils, where even my own knowledge and perceptions are stretched.

We are a family. Wellington is an incredibly happy and close-knit community. Every single member of staff, teaching and non-teaching, go above and beyond the requirements of their position, to ensure that the pupils and their colleagues leave feeling valued and enhanced each day. It is a place where ideas can thrive, and creativity and ingenuity are highly prized.
