Carol Sanderson, Primary 1 Teacher

Before coming to us she taught in Istanbul (her home for a decade), first at a Turkish primary school and then at the British International School where she was the Head of Pre-school. Prior to that, she taught ESOL in Italy.

What do you love most about teaching, Carol?

Teaching any stage is rewarding, but for me there is nothing quite like Primary 1. I absolutely love it. Starting school is a milestone and it is a privilege to be the one to guide a child through their first year. The delight and wonder in a child’s eyes when they begin to read for themselves for the first time is a joy to behold.

Why did you become a teacher?

I wanted to be a teacher from the moment I started school myself. I have many happy memories of my school days and I loved my time in primary 1 so much so that I asked Santa for a chalkboard that year. I used to “teach” my brothers and when they wouldn’t comply, I taught my dolls! It’s not really surprising that I am back in Primary 1 again.

What makes Wellington so special?

I like the small class sizes because it makes it much easier to meet the individual needs of each child in my class. I also like the friendly family atmosphere at Wellington. Of course, I have to mention the sea! How amazing to be so near the sea! Primary 1 classes over the years have spent very enjoyable afternoons on the beach, building castles and creating transient art as well as exploring rock pools, collecting shells and learning about the different creatures that live there. It is also great to have the use of the woods at Doonside. As a child, I loved playing in the woods next to my house and observing the changes in nature through the different seasons. I still love the changes each season brings and it is wonderful to get to go outside each week with Primary 1. They have a wonderful time whether they are making cakes in the mud kitchen, digging for dinosaur bones, collecting leaves, playing conkers or hunting for bugs![/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
