As is the case each year, S6 students suggested various worthwhile causes to champion for the forthcoming session. However, after listening to excellent presentations, a vote was taken and the clear winner was BEAT, the UK’s leading eating disorder charity.

It is currently estimated that around 1.25 million people in the UK are living with an eating disorder, with ages ranging from as young as 6 to as old as 70. This is impacting more and more young people, within our own school, the local community and nationally.

The desire to shine a light on this issue was driven by one of our S6 students, Ivy, who shared her own personal story of how a family member’s battle with an eating disorder impacted her physical and mental health, and the ripple effect it had within her family. BEAT was instrumental in providing much needed support and advice, as it does to thousands of people on a daily basis.

Eating disorders have the highest mortality rate of all psychiatric disorders and alongside these physical risks, many people also experience additional challenges such as anxiety, depression, suicidal thoughts and PTSD, making recovery even tougher.

BEAT’s mission is to support both those affected by eating disorders and their families and friends. It focuses on raising awareness about symptoms and causes, campaigning for better treatment and fighting against the stigma which surrounds these illnesses and mental health as a whole, so that more people can get the help they need, earlier.

By supporting BEAT, we are not only raising money but also emphasising a sad reality for too many young people who are struggling, reminding them that they are not alone and that recovery is possible. We hope that the Wellington community gets behind this extremely worthwhile cause, in the way you have done for so many charities over the years. Your support is always appreciated and never taken for granted.

We will be sharing details of a range of fundraising activities soon, so watch this space!
