On the 12th of May, Osman Omer (S1) and Emma Stevenson (S3) represented the school in the final of the national spelling contest, “Word Wizard” at the Scottish Parliament. Word Wizard is a multilingual spelling competition open to S1-S3 pupils learning French, Gaelic, German, Mandarin or Spanish. It provides a perfect opportunity for pupils of all levels to excel in language learning by developing their skills in acquisition of vocabulary, pronunciation, spelling, recall and public speaking; not to mention the many literacy outcomes it addresses.
After qualifying at the semi-finals in March at Strathclyde University in Glasgow, our Wellington ‘spellers’ were invited to put their knowledge of 225 words further to test against fifty other competitors, coming from all over Scotland.
Despite the fierce competition, Emma Stevenson came amongst the top 5 in ‘German Intermediate’ section and Osman achieved 3rd place in ‘German Beginner’. What a performance from both linguists!
