Each year members of S6 nominate a variety of worthwhile charities to support. This year was no exception, and we are delighted to announce that we will be supporting Blood Cancer UK for session 2024-2025.

Originally called the Leukaemia Research Fund, the charity was founded in 1962 by David and Hilda Eastwood, in memory of their daughter, Susan, who died in 1960 aged 6 years old, only a few weeks after receiving a leukaemia diagnosis. The charity’s name has changed a few times over the years as the range and scope of its work has evolved to cover all types of blood cancer. The rebrand to “Blood Cancer UK” was completed in 2020 in order to emphasise this. The funding it receives allows for research, support, and campaigning for change. You can read more about its work here: https://bloodcancer.org.uk/about-us/

The inspiration behind this nomination was Montgomery House Captain, Amber, whose family has a specific connection to the impact blood cancer can have on young people and families. Amber underwent surgery 6 years ago, donating bone marrow to her younger brother, who has now been cancer free for several years. As always with the Wellington S6 Charity, this is an amazing organisation to support, especially given Amber’s personal story. We are sure that this will serve as a key motivator to the Sixth Year as they embark upon a year of fundraising activities and events!
